As a child who struggled with school in the traditional sense, I blossomed in art because art had no rules and more importantly no boundaries. I lived and breathed art growing up - ceramics, drawing, painting, crafts, photography. Even though I couldn't read my first novel until I was in grade eleven, I was still able to graduate high school with a scholarship to a fine arts university.
At Emily Carr University of Art and Design and I chose to major in painting.
Although unable to complete my degree due to lack of funds, it is still my dream to return to complete it. I have never stopped and will never stop painting.
I am inspired by life around me - fields of snow, horses wearing their winter jackets, sunsets through tree branches, and everyday objects like a sugar bowl or a house plant. I see paintings in the world around me everyday and when I am particularly struck I sketch the scene and take a photograph for details. I am able to go home and put paint to paper or canvas and recreate what I saw.
When I am working my busy life melts into the background and time stops.
Being a stay at home mom of two, I work mainly in watercolours and acrylics as I need to work with non-toxic paint. I use slow drying acrylics that allow me to manipulate the paints in a similar way that oils work. I love texture and use knives a lot to get it.
